Psycho-Physiological Training In Yoga Education:
Asanas + Attitude Training

From the educational point of view Yoga techniques are pegs on which to hang a lot of our clothes.

Only stretching, bending and twisting yourself in all possible directions will not bring about all the positive and wholesome benefits of Yoga, specially if you have a wrong frame of mind while doing it.

That's why the traditionalists in Yoga recommended a combination of
Right Feelings & Attitudes with certain selected Physical Activities.

The physical activity is no doubt selected after full consideration of its psycho-physical value, but the activity is incomplete without the attitude.

If the activity is of the right kind and the attitude also enriches one's consciousness, then the entire exercise is very satisfying and elevating.

The Four Bhavas of Buddhi
Dharma      Jñana      Vairagya      Aishwarya

Meditative asanas help us to bring about the sense of duty, discipline, conditioning, preparedness, acceptance and commitment.

These are components of Dharma Bhava.

In Jñana Bhava, the asanas for the extremities of the body, upward and sideward stretches and involving twisting help us to develop concentration, balance, body awareness, coordination, training of the senses and training of the breath.

Forward bending asanas and for relaxation help us to develop objectivity, humility, reducing the ego, relaxation, 'let-go' attitude, detachment and surrender.

These are all
Vairagya Bhava.

An finally we have Aishwarya Bhava, where the backward bending asanas help us to develop confidence, self-reliance, sense of achievement, effort, fortitude, freedom, strength, and forbearance.
